So I was cheerful to be able to secure Johto videos. Johto episodes are only on once a week. At seven in the morning on Sunday, and by the time you seek round the episode’s finished and you have to wait another week.

I like battles most, so I decide videos with Gym battles in them, like this one and Flying Ace video. With the books about them, and screenshots from the episode, it makes them impossible to miss! I’ll certainly wait two weeks for this chance.

As far as I know Shaft broke modern ground as a movie starring a sunless man in 1971. Shaft was the perfect example of a rogue cop, taking orders from no one and tracking down the crooks no matter where they hid in the city.

Recommended for fans of Richard Roundtree and quality jazz.

“Who is the man who would risk his neck for his brotha’ man? SHAFT!!”

Blaxploitation? That’s like calling “Bullit” ‘Cracker-jacking’ [I rate Bullit a 2/5 stars] or ‘The Godfather’ “Wopploitation’ [am Italian myself-so clearly my criticism is the asinine labeling of SHAFT as an "exploitation film" simply because a strong lead character is a shaded man-but he is FIRST a strong MAN]

I Savor this film; saw it prior to teen years and was a astounding “adrenaline pump” WITH A Myth. Violence? sure; gratuitous? no; the mean streets of Harlem are a turf war NOT driven by racial hatred but by MONEY [via heroin trade].

A fresh [and I have never read it mentioned] is that this film is an “equal opportunity offender”; the mob-white crooks, want to sell heroin in Novel York turf and have to overpower the long-time “crime boss” of the area- “Bumpy”, a sad career criminal whose CV reads from the petty[numbers] to the Class A felony[murder], who besides being a “crook” has a downright unsuitable disposition-betraying local shaded activists [civil rights ala Malcom X "any means considerable youths] into fighting his “drug war” for him!! Caught in the “middle”, Shaft negotiates a deal for all parties involved-”Bumpy” will pay $10,000 a man [a very 'on target' critique of the indemnity policy paid in Vietnam to American soldiers killed, 80% of whom were black] for “Ben’s” activist “soldiers” to battle the mob. The “lie” revolved around Bumpy’s daughter [Marcy] being nabbed by the mob-this was how Shaft [the gloomy private (...) who is sex machine to all the chicks] was brought into the imbroglia in first dwelling.

This film won the Oscar for its pounding, amazing soundtrack, but I judge deserved several; the screenplay was great- besides the handful of “famed” quotes, there are TONS of other memorable lines [the confrontation between Bumpy and Ben about the respective merits of civil rights and 'numbers, drugs and [prostituses] is very profound even in brevity], the demographic of “strong sad women” in an elderly dusky woman intervening between Shaft and Ben and preventing a fight; and many others.

The only “weaknesses” [and obviously, I Savor this movie!!] are Shaft’s relationship with the cops; what the hell forged their bond, and the actor who played the cop Shaft interacted with sucked; there was NO character development of the mobsters “tantalizing in”; and the women in the film were given a very demeaning role-”No one understands him but his woman”? Shaft gets it on with a white ‘one-night stand’ gal, implicitly a frequent activity of his; does his “woman”, totally under-developed character played by a ample actress, regain this infidelity or is she “clueless”?

The ending does not really cast Shaft in a “dauntless” light; his courage is 100%, but he basically “takes the money and runs”, making fun of his “cop pal” as Marcy is returned to the homely Bumpy, several of Ben’s men are killed, and war has broken out in earnest between Bumpy and the mob which Shaft tells the cop pal “it’s your spot” and exits via the downbeat of the guitar chords and percussion breaking out to extinguish the film.

In all, a celebrated of mine, colossal, colossal action, many “undertones” in the messages incidental in the film, and Shaft IS one Abominable Mutha’ …..!!!!

‘Final Fantasy’ is a computer game that has gone through countless versions and editions. Taken as a whole, this mythos is probably one of the best know games in its genre. It is distinct from the beginning of this film that Sony and Hironbu Sakaguchi (producer, director, and writer) were intent on topping an already shimmering history of graphic accomplishments. In a sense, ‘The Spirits Within’ represents a section of history in the making. It is the first film that presents a startling approximation of life using only automation.

The state is simple. An asteroid falling to earth carries within it a host of phantom creatures that seem hell twisted on destroying earthly life. Civilization has been reduced to living in shielded enclaves, and it is only a matter of time before the planet becomes a fearful wasteland. Aki Ross and her mentor, Dr. Sid, are working on the creation of a neutralizing ‘wave’ based on the eight basic phantom life forms. General Hein does not trust Dr. Sid’s theories about a Gaia, or planetary spirit, and wants to employ a gargantuan orbital laser cannon to raze the new meteor, possible destroying the earth in the process. The conflict between these points of thought and their shattering effects on the planet are the meat of the film.

Captain Gray Edwards, once Aki’s lover, crystallizes this struggle between the material world of violent reaction and the spiritual world of growth and synthesis. The film plays a bit like an evolved ‘Starship Troopers.’ In many ways, it presents the same visual image, and deals with the same issues. The jam for the director and the viewer is to score past the pretty graphic work to experience the abiding spiritual faith that is its meaning. Ironically, the film itself is a metaphor for the issues it expresses.

It is almost futile to discuss the film’s animation and build. They are so far above what we are worn to that the required superlatives sound trite. In essence, the animation staff spot out to develop something that is even more staunch than life, and to a huge extent, they have succeeded. This hyperrealism, combined with an almost ballet like feeling of choreography perform a sense of moment that makes this seem far more than an action film. The overall animation is carefully balanced so as to hold the focus on the characters. Even so, this film has such a sensory attain that the viewer is tempted to forget the status and simply eye the conceal.

The significant DVD provides the film and a whole residence of commentaries (directing crew, animation and staging, composer, and production staff), plus the usual trailers, etc. In the special edition, a second disk adds an extensive ‘Making of…’ segment, the entire screenplay and some analysis of character, vehicle, and prop get. The first time I fired up FF7 on my playstation console 5 years ago, I marveled at the opening cinematics. At that point, I notion it would be the coolest thing if someone made a movie honest like it. On July 11 at 4:30pm I witnessed that dream approach moral.

I could say it was all I was expecting and more, but that wouldn’t be entirely honest. The games took 40-50+ hours to complete with a tale that had numerous twists to the station and character developement that went far beyond some bestselling novels. While I believe it would be large to contemplate a 6 hour Final Fantasy movie that had such an intricate region, I realize that would be unrealistic for a feature film. All things considered, I believe Square did an outstanding job compressing the yarn into the time allotted.

The script could have been written a itsy-bitsy bit better, but I mediate it was written the map it was so the average movie-goer would sustain up with the place. I know I didn’t have any grief following Dr. Sid’s theories about Gaia and what the Phantom’s really were. But that could’ve been from playing the games.. I saw sort of the understanding in FF7, with everyone and everything having a spirit.

The cg was unbelievable and tte physics were.. well, terminate. Although I consider in 65 years, we may be able to bend the laws of physics a bit more, so this could possibly demolish up mimicing staunch life in 2065. I’ve read some film critics comment about the lack of consistency with the Phantoms, how they can fade through walls and suck the life out of someone, yet can be harmed by former weapons. Those guns didn’t peruse ancient to me… energy weapons would have the achieve they did. Opinion: those film critics who commented about that didn’t know what they were talking about.

I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and I intend to glimpse it a few more times before it leaves theatres. This quite possibly gets my vote for the Best Movie of All time.

Peter Cushing plays Christopher Maitland an avid collector of antiques and curiosities such as a book that once belonged to the well-known Marquis, the veil of which is made of human skin! Despite warnings from his fellow collector Sir Matthew Phillips (Christopher Lee) about the skulls gross powers Cushing through radiant means and scandalous comes into possession of the skull and once it is placed among his collection it starts to occupy a monstrous control over his mind turning him into a killer resulting in a tragic conclusion to the account.

Ably directed by traditional Hammer director Freddie Francis this film has a very spooky premise which delivers a splendid but not substantial fable. The film does tend to crawl at times, in particular in Cushing’s dream sequence where he is abducted and taken to a mysterious court where he is almost forced to commit suicide. However “The Skull” has some very memorably scary moments.Particulary effective is the blueprint the skull seems to rob on a life of its bear. Some of the action is shot from within the skull which is good in engendering an eerie sense that we are seeing what it is actually thinking. It’s movements around rooms and its appearing in different locations is also well handled. The film also boasts one of the finest graveyard sets of any Hammer/Amicus production in the flash succor sequence at the beginning when the Marquis’s skull is dug up. Paunchy of creepy broken-down headstones, wrought iron fencing and an eerie whistling wind it is unsurpassed in creating impartial the good sense of doom and panic in this fable. Indeed as in all these types of productions the attention to detail is proper. Cushing and Lee work well together as always and it is well-behaved to gape Peter Cushing, a highly underrated actor performing in a role that has a bit of menace thrown in for top-notch measure.

“The Skull” is definately provocative viewing and has a theme which is current and a fade away from the usual Vampire/Wolfman/Frankenstein features that predominated at this time. There are moments where this film drags, and I have concern watching the sequence where the skull starts flying around the room, but director Freddie Francis lucked out when he decided to shoot several shots from the perspective of the skull. To do this he attach a skull mockup in front of an aeroflex camera and moved around on roller skates. The joyful result of this seeming absurdity is that the roaming camera serves to benefit involve the viewer with the developing psychological panic. The best sequence is when Maitland has a nightmare where he’s kidnapped by the police and forced to play Russian Roulette. Despite what you would contemplate to be inherent shortcomings, “The Skull” is an above average panic film carried in enormous allotment by Cushing’s performance. It is nice to recognize him doing someone other than Dr. Frankenstein or Dr. Van Helsing.

Season 3 was the first (and last) season of the note to air on the fledgling CW network. But Thomas and co-writers have created something magical and perfect here. The heroine Veronica is sarcastic, at times mean, overly hard-boiled, and paunchy of acerbic wit. There’s nothing candy-coated about Veronica. First time viewers often disregard the point to as “another teen drama,” and for this reason more than any other it failed to attract a sustaining audience. I rush you to give it a chance. Especially if you have a sarcastic mind, if you’ve lost faith in the basically pleasant nature of humanity, if noir interests you, or if you unbiased like an incandescent mystery or exceptionally well-acted drama, this may be what you’re looking for. It was for me.

Admittedly, I stare very exiguous television, but to assign things in perspective this is a short list of the TV shows I’ve watched and loved over the years: Firefly, Battlestar Galactica, Freaks and Geeks, Deadwood, and Wonderfalls. I would location Veronica Mars at the top of this delectable heap. (Actually, looking at that list, every expose was cancelled before its time set BSG which is calm on the air. Maybe that says something. Maybe not.) Recently, my wife and I started re-watching season 1 and 2 of Veronica Mars with a friend. His comment after one episode was this, “This reveal shouldn’t be on television. It’s too… inspiring, too exquisite.” I couldn’t have said it any better. Unfortunately, our friend was moral in the kill. V-Mars was too inviting, too delicate. And now it’s gone.

Heads-up: This review is for the S3 DVD dwelling as a DVD place, and not an editorial about the quality of Season 3. (For the narrate, I’d give most S3 episodes a solid 4-stars) This review is more for the VM fans who don’t need to be “sold” on the series, but are deciding whether to shell-out $45 for the DVDs, given that the last 2 DVD sets were aesthetic skimpy on the extras.

The Season 3 DVD status, while it quiet doesn’t have commentaries (not everyone is as chatty as Matt Groening and Co., I guess), it finally includes a few sizable behind-the-scenes extras, most notably, a 90-minute (or so) discussion with Purchase Thomas, who walks us through clips and explains his choices. Very episode commentary-like, unprejudiced more efficient– you go through a lot of first-rate clips from the whole season.

Chapters from the RT commentary I especially liked were on accepted guest characters, well-liked pairings (Veronica and her dad; VM and Logan; VM and Duncan was not included here, mercifully) .

It also includes RT’s 14-minute mini-episode presentation for the CW heads that takes Veronica to the FBI in season 4. It’s fun to peek, even if it DOES beget you kind of shaded because it never came to fruition, and instead you now have to sit through a whole convoluted thing of Heroes to glance Kristen Bell on TV for 3 minutes. (Hypothetically, of course, as Heroes is, like, awesome!)

In conclusion, a reliable rob for established VM fans who wished for extras on the S1 and S2 DVDs.

Excellent Sound, But they Do Take Getting Used To
The sound produced from the Etymotic ER-4P headphones is excellent, but they do take some getting used to. When I first purchased the Etymotic ER-4P headphones I was under the impression they had to be inserted far enough into your ear canal that they almost scratched your brain. But they really don’t have to be inserted that far. I have learned that if you moisten them, insert them quickly, with your mouth slightly open, you get a more consistently comfortable fit, tight seal, and improved resonance. I understand other reviewers complaints of a lack of bass, and I do click on the iPod EQ bass for a slightly fuller sound, but the bass on the Etymotic ER-4P’s is intended to be a natural sound, not a boomy bass that is so prevalent with less expensive headphones.

It seems to me that I can hear sounds in music that I never even knew existed with other headphones. I have listened to many of my favorite 70’s hits on my iPod, and the Etymotic ER-4P’s give them a whole new life. For instance, John Lennon’s #9 Dream sounds especially good, and when Carly Simon sings I can hear her enunciate each consonant as they leave her lips, and there are bongo drums I had never heard before in the Bee Gee’s disco hit, More Than a Woman !! The Etymotic ER-4P’s are a great pair of earbud headphones, but they may require patience and a moderate break-in period to get used to the feel of them. I would say the Etymotic ER-4P’s easily rival the sound of my Bose Quiet Comfort II headphones.

Great with iPod
I’ve been using the Etymotic ER-4P for about 6 months and I find them indispensable. I spend 2-3 hours a day commuting by bus and train, and the combination of a 20GB iPod with my Etymotic ER-4P is an essential commute accessory. They reduce ambient noise (even nearby loud conversations and normal train noises) to a quiet rumble, such that I can listen to music without feeling like I have to crank up the music to drown out those ambient noises.

I’m not an audiophile by any means, but I do listen to a lot of music. This setup (20Gb 3rd gen iPod + ER-4P) is by far the BEST listening environment I’ve ever experienced, way better than my crappy home stereo. The sound quality from these headphones, along with the acoustic isolation from outside noises, brings out parts of songs I’ve never heard before. I prefer listening to songs on these headphones over anywhere else, really.

I can’t compare these to the ER-6 or the ER-6i, etymotic’s lower priced alternatives. I sprung for the ER-4P’s without trying either of those, but I have no regrets spending the extra $100 on them. Like the other reviewer said, just make sure you get the ER-4P if you’re getting these for portable listening, as its impedances are tailored differently for portable devices.

These earphones do have to slide into your ear canal, which may freak some people out. I use the 3-flange tip (rather than the foam one, which felt kinda scratchy to me) and it took some getting used to. Allow yourself a few days to get over being weirded out by the feeling. And I’m not even going to get into the ear wax issues. ugh. Still, they’re awesome.
